Magnesium oxide (MgO) has been used dating back thousands of years. It has been found that magnesium oxide was used in the Great Wall of China as a cement form. China has the world’s largest deposits of magnesium oxide, which is sufficient to resupply the world with cement fibre, gypsum and wood partitioning and ceilings every year for the next 800 years.
Magnesium oxide board (MgO board) is a factory-made, non-insulating sheathing board product. It can be used for a number of applications including wall and ceiling linings, fascias, soffits, tile backing and underlayment. Magnesium Oxide Board is also used structurally, as in bracing for walls and also semi-structurally, such as an underlayment for flooring. It is made primarily of magnesium oxide, and is commonly called MgO Board (pronounced emm-gee-oh) due to its chemical composition of magnesium and oxygen.
It is also referred to as Magboard or in our case Supertec Magboard.
Magnesium Oxide Board is a type of sheathing board like gypsum board or cement fibre board – however with several improved characteristics such as fire resistance, weather ability, strength, resistance to mould and mildew, flexibility, adherence advantages and so on.
Magnesium Oxide Board board is available for building construction and comes in various thicknesses and sheet sizes. It also comes in various grades, such as smooth finishes, rough textures, and utility grades. It is white, beige or light gray in colour, and has a «hard» sound when rapped with your knuckles-somewhat like cement fibre board.
Like any sheathing board, Magnesium Oxide Board can absorb water but its performance is unaffected. Thus it can be used indoors and outdoors, and in damp locations, such as showers. Like Portland cement based sidings, if Magnesium Oxide Board is used outdoors in an exposed location, it needs sealing in much the same way as cement.
Magnesium oxide board was developed many years ago as a cheap alternative to cement fibre board. It turned out as a coincidence to be a product with many superior characteristics. Magnesium Oxide Board was extensively used in construction during the 2008 World Olympics buildings in Beijing…and was used in the world famous Taipei 101 building which up until recently was the world’s tallest building.
Supertec Magnesium Oxide Board is made by the above formula of chemicals. The stable magnesium celluloid is reinforced by glass fibre netting. It has the advantageous features of being light weight, strong, very low contraction properties, flexible yet impact resistant. It has excellent drainage properties, is fire resistant, and is very easy to work with. It can become waterproof by sealing it; corrosion proof and plasticity are better than wood, paper surface plaster board or gypsum board and cement fibre board. Most importantly Supertec Mgo board is cured without the use of any heating and thus using very little energy unlike gypsum board and cement fibre board. This makes it greener and although it is a product of the past is fast becoming the product of the future for these reasons.
Supertec board’s retain their excellent dimensional stability even in damp and humid conditions and can be installed at an early stage in the construction programme, before wet trades are completed and the building is weather-tight.
Through experiment and testing, Supertec has established that after Supertec MgO board has been immersed in the water for one month, it keeps its original shape, without deformation or expansion, its dry-wet deforming ratio is 0.26%, its water absorbing capacity is 15%, and the creasing resistance is 15Mpa under dry conditions and 22 Mpa under moist conditions.
Supertec Mgo board is non combustible and can achieve fire ratings as high as 4 hours given the correct installation it can be used for sound studios , schools, public areas, movie theatre’s, train partitioning, bus partitioning, boat partitioning, shopping centres, any area where the fireproof function is necessary.
The material is classed A class as tested by many international testing authorities. It has been tested to the American and British standards for fire. The South African bureau of standards testing requirements meets those of both the American and British testing requirements.
Supertec 9mm board will provide the same and better reduction in sound as a standard 123mm wall made of four layers of 12mm gypsum board, which is equal to the soundproof of effect of a 150mm common solid brick wall.
BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL RESISTANCE
Supertec board is resistant to mould growth, most chemicals and attack by rodents and insects.
LIGHT WEIGHT AND HIGH INTENSITY/STRENGTH
Supertec 9mm thick board weights 9.63kg/m2. When using a steel frame and MgO board as cladding the weight is about 1/10 of that of a common cement brick or clay brick wall while the anti-impact intensity is 2-3 times that of a normal plaster wall. It can be easily installed and the construction time is much shorter.
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES PREVENTION & ANTISTATIC
Supertec MgO board is suitable for use where electromagnetic waves interception and static electricity prevention function are necessary. Such as operating theatre’s, X ray rooms of the hospital , laboratories , cleaning rooms, electronic component assembly area, film factory’s, any area which requires the reduction of electromagnetic waves and or antistatic environments.
Supertec MgO board is used commonly instead of MDF because the magnesium board surface condition is clean.
Supertec Magnesium board is a substitute for OSB ply woods to help strengthen in the residential industry or the steel frame housing industry.
Supertec Magnesium board is commonly used as flooring.
