Tips For Making A Low Ceiling Look Higher
Looking for ways to add some flair to your house? Making your ceiling look higher is the perfect way to modernise your house. There are many ways to create the illusion of higher ceilings whilst adding chic decorative updates. Interior designers have many tricks for making your ceiling look higher. Below we go through some of our favourites.
Ceiling colour: Paint your ceiling white or a lighter colour than your walls. High-gloss paint is a great option as it will reflect the light and make the ceiling look less fixed or static. Alternatively, you could paint past the wall (paint the wall and two inches of the ceiling) all the same colour. This also helps create the illusion of a higher walls.
Tall floral arrangements: Designers have recommended that tall vases or floral arrangements, filled with seasonal grasses or blossoming branches are a great way to trick the eye into thinking the ceilings are higher than they look. This is because it slows down the eye’s movement as it moves gradually upwards.
Vertical patterns and stripes: Using vertical stripes over horizontal stripes is best as the vertical stripes make the walls appear longer. This is a common rule which used in fashion as well. This trick does not just apply to stripes, a four- poster, tall, skinny post bed can also help make the ceilings appear higher.
No overhead lights or fans: Fans and overhead lights should be avoided if the intention is to make the ceilings look higher. This is due to the fact that fans and overhead lights draw attention to the ceiling. If you must hang a chandelier, the best thing is to make sure it is hung higher than it normally would.
Higher artwork: Hanging small frames above windows and door openings, tricks the eye into thinking the room has higher ceilings. Another trick that creates this illusion, is hanging your artwork slightly higher than normal. This trick is great because not only do it create the illusion of higher ceilings but adding artwork to your home, adds a chic decorative update.
Ceiling to floor curtains: Hanging your curtains from the ceiling to the floor is a sure way to elongate the walls of a room. Hanging window treatments as high as possible also helps with elongating walls.
